Description
A marvelous and rare antique collectible African artifact - want to see another? Go to the museum!Basket - Vegetal cord, reed and twined fiber - Wum - Western Grassfields Cameroon - 40.5 cm.
A rare Wum traditional utility basket from Western Grassfields, Cameroon, last half 19th Century to the very early 20th Century. This is an exceedingly rare and brilliant basketry artifact that has survived from the 1800's. See the last 3 photos including a photo showing a basket exactly of this type from the book
The Art of Cameroon
(1984) by Tamara Northern.
That one is in the collection of Chicago's Field Museum
of Natural History.
There are some breaks and fraying especially seen underneath the cylindrical woven base portion on this example but overall it remains intact with only minor losses. We properly classify this artifact as in GOOD condition. It's status as an African collectable is solid and multifaceted as an article of culture, artistry and craftsmanship. Most of
these artifacts over 100 years old have been lost to time.
Guaranteed old, authentic and as described. If you have questions please write.
See following for description of the almost identical basket illustrated there.
