    Description

This lovely painting of a Native American woman on leather is almost 10 & 1/4 inches wide and about 11 & 1/4 inches long.  The leather strap used for hanging adds about another 4 inches to the length.  It appears that the subject of the painting is named Starlight and the artist's initials are M. M.  This is a souvenir from Tashmoo Park where Native Americans from nearby Walpole Island (in Canada) sold handicrafts to tourists who visited the amusement park.  Perhaps Starlight was a member of the Walpole Island First Nation or another of the Ojibwe people or perhaps she's a subject of one of their traditional stories because my online research shows that the Anishinaabe people call themselves the star people.
Tashmoo Park was located along the St. Clair river on Harsens Island, Michigan.  It was open from 1897 to 1951 but was most popular from the early 1900s to the late 1920s.  Like the Starlight mystery, I've been unable to determine who created this painting or when it was made.  I'll leave it to the new owner to continue researching.  This piece is over 70 years old and in quite nice condition.  It appears to show age darkening rather than soiling, the leather does have some wrinkles and there is some loss to the painted border on the top and one side (see photos).  The most noticeable issue is two small partial holes in the leather; the one by a feather is 5/8 inch and the other by the chin is 3/8 inch (see photos).  Best of luck bidding on this unique piece of Tashmoo Park history.
This souvenir painting will be carefully protected from moisture and packed in a box to ensure that it travels safely and the package will weigh about 12 ounces.  Shipping to US bidders will be by your choice of USPS Ground Advantage or Priority Mail (check eBay's shipping tab for ALL your options).  Although Post Office rates keep going up, kindly be assured that I will make every effort to only charge you the same amount that the PO charges me.  And did you know that eBay keeps some of the money that you pay me for shipping?  I do not pass these charges on to you or make any profit on shipping and I do not charge any handling fee.
