    Description

For your consideration is this rare and distinctly carved antique bird-beaked mask
    combined with human features called
    “ge gon”
    or
    “gägon”.
The hornbill bird is represented by the
    ge gon
, important in Dan mythology as the first being created by
    Zlan,
    the supreme being.
This oval-face hard wood mask was carved with a high forehead, conjoined protuberant eyebrows, rectangular eyeholes, angular cheekbones,
a long ridged tapering beak, the tip decorated with red cloth remnants and horsetail hair. The lower jaw is flexible, the rim perforated with 28 apertures and there is an old cardboard tag stapled to the inside of the lower jaw with these inked words; “Mask Poro Society Dan tribe circa 1850”.
